The Mercer Island PeaceMakers' Peace Activity Scholarship will be given, at the end of the junior year in high school, to a student who is a Mercer Island resident or who attends school on the island.
The scholarship will be for $1000, and will be given to a student for efforts in the area of promoting international peace and understanding, and/or non-violent conflict resolution. The student will be required to report on his/her activities in this area, and to describe how the activity has changed his or her thinking, and how it has made a difference to others involved. Applicants are encouraged to seek assistance with their report; this is not an essay contest. We are more concerned with actions and results than with writing ability.
Projects should be derived from the student's area of talents and interests. The action could be a visual, performing, literary, or social arts project, studying peace movements, starting a peace group, or participation in community activities that foster understanding among nationalities, cultures and ethnic groups, etc. What is important to us is knowing what effect those actions have had on the student and those with or for whom s/he has worked.
The evaluation process will be based on supporting documentation, letters of recommendation and indications of the student's future plans for peacemaking efforts.
We hope, by giving this scholarship, to encourage students to think of creative ways to use their energies toward peace and understanding, and to realize that there are always alternatives to the use of violence. One world, at peace can happen because of individual actions and commitment.
